Route 66, Wigwam Motel, and Flagstaff

So the whole historic Route 66 thing has fascinated me ever since I watched the movie Cars. And much of the old route follows along with Int. 40. So I had already decided on a few places along the way that I wanted to stop. One of them was Holbrook, AZ, home of the infamous Wigwam Motel.
My original plan was for us to arrive here in time to spend Sunday night in one of the wigwams. But since we were ahead of schedule, we wanted to go ahead and get to Flagstaff to stay the night. However, I still wanted to stop here to get some pictures.
There are 15 of these wigwams spaced out in a half circle around the parking lot. There were all these old cars parked for affect. It was just like in the movie Cars, except these weren't the orange cones.

Look! There's Mater and Doc!

Had to get a picture in front of Mater!

As we got closer to Flagstaff, it was so interesting to see things such as power plants in the middle of the desert.

And then we entered one of the National Forests that surrounds Flagstaff. Such a dramatic difference.

Another train. We saw so many of these.

As we arrived in Flagstaff at 5 pm, we traveled down a bit of the Route 66 through downtown.

We ate at Fratelli Pizza just a few blocks from our hotel, the Drury Inn.

Annessa took a job delivering pizzas to help pay our bill. ;)

This was some cool artwork on the side of one of the buildings on our walk back to the hotel.

And an old church building along the way.

This is Daniel and Lougene. Daniel met him online a few years ago playing World of Warcraft. Lougene lives in Flagstaff where he goes to the Northern Arizona University. He ate with us at the pizza place.
When we got back to the hotel, we let the kids swim for a while.
That was a great idea, because when we got back to the room, they were worn out and fell asleep almost immediately!

Next stop: Grand Canyon on Monday morning!
